Finding oil and gas is the first stage of a highly complex operation. Explorationists use many techniques including specialist geological knowledge to estimate the likelyhood of oil, or gas, or both being present. The next stage is drilling; often in remote locations and in difficult terrain such as in frozen seas or arid deserts. Once the presence of hydrocarbon is proven and commercial conditions are right, the field will then be developed and brought into production.
